This can happen
when your computer has associated a particular type of file with a
program that doesn't actually support it. Quite often this happens
due to user-error, sometimes programs you install will take a
particular liking to a file type for no apparent reason causing
this issue.
In some cases it
does need to be fixed before you can install your downloads, other
times you can just ignore the file associations as the file
doesn't need to be opened with anything in order to work properly
(double check the instructions if
you're not sure which files should be installed by double clicking
to run them and which files simply need to be placed in a
particular folder).
What needs
fixing?
If the zip you have
downloaded is opening with something that does not handle zips
then you will need to change the file association as follows:-
Right
click on the zip file
-
> Choose "Open With..."
From
the sub-menu, choose "Choose Program" to browse for an
appropriate program
From
the list choose the zip program
you have
installed on your computer

When
you've located a suitable program, check the box at the bottom
that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind
of file"
Click
OK - your computer will now associate your zips with your zip
program and you should be able to open them and extract the
contents as per your programs instructions.
(In the sample picture
above I've highlighted Winrar
which I use, but if you are a Windows XP user like me, then you can
also use the Compressed (zipped) Folders program, this will make
zips behave just like a regular windows folder, you can simply
double click on it and copy the contents to the right location on
your computer.)
What
does NOT need fixing?
People
will sometimes tell us they can't install items because of this
problem, however, quite often they do not need to open the file with
anything, it just needs to be put inside the correct folder
and
left alone (please choose the relevant help topic from Adding
Downloads to your game if you're not sure where the files should
go).
This
applies to the following types of files:-
-
Sims
2 Furniture (.package files)
-
Sims
2 Clothing, Genetics, Make-Up and Meshes (.package files)
-
ALL
Sims 1 content except skin textures (.iff .wll .flr .cmx .skn)
Don't
worry if your computer thinks they should be linked to a different
program, they will still work fine in your game as long as you
follow the installation instructions properly!
