Often referred to as the Edwardian Era this heralded a new modern age in fashion for women as for the first time fashion began to adapt to the practical needs the modern 20th century woman now faced. The availability of the bicycle led to women in some western countries venturing out in a divided skirt suit, like culottes, these were practical. Every day dresses, unlike their Victorian predecessors, became more light-weight, easier to wear and to move in, reflecting the more varied lives led by Edwardian middle class women compared to previous generations as more and more embarked on paid employment, charity work or academic pursuits.
