The industrial age brought both the means of mass production and also an expanded middle class which made the fashion industry a mass market for the first time. A new range of chemical dyes were invented over the course of the century, the latter half seeing women's clothing in ever more vibrant and 'unnatural' colours. Unlike the preceding regency period men's clothing became increasingly austere, the famous English gentleman's suit and bowler hat is a relic of the Victorian era. Meanwhile well-to-do women's clothing generally consisted of enormous skirts, with the very pinched waist being very fashionable throughout the period.
