The 18th century period of the Enlightenment changed attitudes considerably towards women and the feminisation of fashion is the direct result of this, the spectacle of the enormous skirts and rising wigs with abundant pleated fabrics meant that women could be imposing reflecting their improved status. Unlike the preceding ages sleeves are short, the exaggerated silhouette was a picture of ultra femininity which men couldn't compete with. Mens' dress changed dramatically too, the enlightenment saw wit being prized over physical prowess with the result that military styles of dress fell out of favour and more feminine styles became fashionable with skirted trousers, long hanging cravats and full bottomed wigs.
