The 17th Century has a reputation of extremes in terms of fashion, the Jacobean ruff and the decadent lace trimmed silk dress contrasting with the dour, starched outfits of the puritans. During this period mens fashion saw rising waistlines and the supported full skirt became fashionable for wealthy women. The heavy brocades of earlier years give way to the French style of shiny silk fabrics. Although the Puritan style in Europe was less sculptured, it still favoured strong primary colours and lace and feathers still made the outfits striking, a look that was taken to America by the Pilgrims crossing the Atlantic.
